How to Write a Check Amount in Words
When writing a check, enter the payment amount in two places. Write the amount as numbers in the dollar box, then write the same amount in words on the line below the payee.
For example, $1,428.37 can be written as:
One Thousand Four Hundred Twenty-Eight and 37/100 Dollars
The whole-dollar amount is written in words, while the cents are commonly written as a fraction over 100.
How to Write Cents on a Check
Use two digits for the cents followed by /100.
$25.50 → Twenty-Five and 50/100 Dollars
$100.05 → One Hundred and 05/100 Dollars
$5,000.00 → Five Thousand and 00/100 Dollars
Always double-check that the numerical amount and written amount match before signing the check.

Write $100.00 in the number box and One Hundred and 00/100 Dollars on the written amount line.
What if the written amount and number on a check do not match?
Double-check both amounts before signing the check. Under UCC §3-114, words generally prevail over numbers when the terms of a negotiable instrument contradict each other.
